HOW THE LAYERS WORK
Build the box.
Then shape its surface.
A rigid box may use a greyboard core with specialty paper wrapped outside. A folding carton may instead use printable board as its visible structure. The inside can use a separate lining or insert.

- The board or tube wall that gives the pack its form.
- Outer surface
- Visible paper, fabric or covering, chosen for colour, texture and printing.
- Inside
- Optional lining plus an insert designed around the product.
A material can play more than one role, depending on the structure and construction. The roles below are starting points for review.
