A complete cost checklist for collapsible rigid boxes
Build a like-for-like comparison of boxes, inserts, assembly, storage and transport before choosing flat-pack.
Choose the delivery stage first
An empty flat box delivered to a fulfilment team and a filled gift box dispatched to a customer describe different stages. Compare the same quantity of complete packaging at the same stage, to the same destination. State which party supplies the product, packs it and arranges the next shipment.
List everything that ships
Record the outer box, insert, any separate closure or protective components, and the master carton. If inserts ship separately, include their cartons as well. Obtain dimensions, pieces per carton and weights for each packing arrangement; do not infer these from the finished box size.
Record assembly work
Name the assembly team and location. Trial the agreed sample with the intended tools and instructions, then record the work steps and time. Include placing inserts and products, handling protective materials and inspecting the assembled result. Confirm what happens when a component is damaged during packing.
Request costs against the same assumptions
Separate the quoted boxes and inserts, development or tooling, samples, assembly work, storage and transport. Identify the currency, quantity basis, delivery scope and exclusions. Avoid adding or comparing figures that cover different destinations or different responsibilities.
Use volume as one measurement
The YDP volume tool compares master-carton volume and rounds up incomplete cartons. It excludes weight, freight pricing, duties, assembly and separately packed components unless you have accounted for them in the inputs. A volume difference is not a saving in dollars.
Keep a fixed-box reference
Compare the alternatives against the same product support and presentation requirements. If repeated collapse is required, agree how it will be checked. Take unresolved fit, assembly and packing questions into a sample plan before selecting a production specification.
